Introduction to Canvas Course

Course Description:

This self-paced course is designed for faculty who are learning Canvas for the first time or want to learn more about specific features and tools inside of the learning management system. You can also use this course as a reference once you start your online course and you have questions. This course is designed to help faculty have a basic understanding of the Canvas platform and be ready to use Canvas with your classes- regardless of whether you intend to teach online or face to face courses. Participants can choose to learn about a specific topic by attending the live session or it time does not allow this you can choose to watch the recording.

Completing of this training will be required for all Faculty who will be using Canvas to teach online and blended courses at SCF, regardless of previous eCertification or years of experience

Professional Development Credit Guidelines:

After attending the live training or by viewing the recording for a specific training topic you will have the opportunity to participate in a short quiz that will allow you to test your knowledge on that specific area. There are a total of 19 training topics offered throughout the semester. 8 of these training topics have been marked as Core and the remaining 11 have been marked as supplemental. The Core Modules contain the basic skills required to successfully deploy a course using Canvas, while the Supplemental Modules provide training in individual special canvas features.

To receive professional development credit you must attend/view all 8 Core and 2 supplemental live or recorded training sessions along with its assessment at the end of each training module in this course. Of the 10 live or recorded training sessions that you attend or view, a minimum of 8 of these sessions must be in the Core sessions to receive professional development credit.

Quizzes

Once you attend or review a recording you will need to take a quiz and achieve a score of 90% or better to receive professional development credit. If you do not pass on the first attempt you can review the information and take the quiz over again to achieve a passing score and to receive credit for this session. The passing score will be recorded in the Gradebook and will be our record of your workshop attendance.

What is this course about?

This course overview is designed for faculty who have never used Canvas or who are just getting started. You can also use this course as a reference once you start your online course and you have questions. By the end of this training you should have a basic understanding of the Canvas platform and be ready to use Canvas with your classes- regardless of whether you intend to teach online or face to face courses.

Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Identify ways to design course-related content via pages and rich content editor.
  • Identify ways to build course-related activities via assignments, discussions and quizzes.
  • Identify assessment options via rubrics, speedgrader and gradebook tools.
  • Identify ways to manage enrollment and instructor online presence via messaging system (inbox), user settings (including profile and notification preferences), and groups.
  • Identify the navigation links in user global dashboard.
  • Navigate within Canvas.
  • Communicate effectively, using the Canvas Inbox tool

Details

This course contains the schedule and all the training resources that we will be covering over the fall semester. We have 27 different training times available to you and all of these training sessions can also be attended virtually through a Lync session that is available in the details of each session. In addition to the the training we also offering Consultations, Canvas Labs and Course Reviews. You can also see more details by clicking on the Modules tab or the the calendar at the top of the screen.

The Live trainings are only 30 minutes long so we will be covering a lot of information in a short time. To prepare for the training, please review the handout for the specific training you want to attend so you have a better understanding of the topic before the live session.

After the live session is concluded we will post a recording of the session within 24 hours and post this in the modules.

When you have completed all of the trainings that you want to participate in, please help us continue to improve our training participating in a very brief End of Training Progress Report. The brief questionnaire is an opportunity for you to quickly reevaluate the main topics of the training and so we can continue to improve the training topics and the training program.
