Grading Policy:
The student must achieve an overall average grade of 80% in the classroom component of the course and pass the clinical component of the course by the end of the semester to successfully pass the course.

Final course average is determined as follows:

Exam One
Exam Two
Exam Three
Exam Four
Exam Five
Exam Six
Cumulative Final Exam

*The Final Course Grades are NOT rounded up*
Exams: 80%  of final grade
Cumulative Final Exam: 20%  of final grade

A Math Quiz will be administered with a 100% achievement required in order to successfully pass Nursing Process I. Three opportunities to achieve a 100% will be provided prior to the withdrawal date. Inability to achieve 100% will result in dismissal from Nursing Process I. Calculators are permitted.

Grading Scale:

94 – 100 = A
87 – 93 = B
80 – 86 = C
73 – 79 = D
72 and below = F

In the event a student’s final grade is between 79.20 – 79.99 two faculty members will review course exams to ensure the final grade is correct.

Exam Policy:
Students may bring two (2) pencils and one (1) highlighter into the classroom/testing area. Nothing else may be brought into the classroom during examinations, including cell phones.

Calculators will be provided by the faculty members.

All exams are given at the beginning of the class for which they are scheduled.

Exam Absence:
It is expected that students be present for all examination. Students are expected to schedule appointments and extra-curricular activities around the requirements of the program. Should it be necessary to miss an exam contact the classroom faculty on the day of exam and prior to the start time of the exam to schedule a makeup exam. Contact can be made by phone or communicating via LMS system or SCF e-mail. Failure to notify will result in a zero for the exam.

There will be a 5% penalty for exams not taken on the scheduled day and time. An alternate exam with more or less questions may be administered to anyone missing a scheduled exam. Missed exams not made up within three business days will be given a zero. Early exams are not available.

A student may appeal the 5% penalty by submitting a letter of appeal to the Nursing Program Chair listing the extenuating circumstances responsible for the absence on exam day. The Nursing Program Chair will determine whether or not the circumstances warrant removal of the penalty.

Examinations will be timed per question (start to finish) based on the NCLEX-RN Examination in order to assist the students in developing the skills needed for completing the NCLEX-RN Licensure Exam within the time allotment.

Scantron Answer Sheet Policy:
It is the student's responsibility to correctly mark the Scantron answer sheet. Only answers marked on the Scantron answer sheet will be considered for grading. No answer changes will be made after the Scantron is submitted for grading.

Exam Review Policy:
During the course of the semester, exams may be reviewed individually by appointment, up until the time of the subsequent exam. There will be no group review of previously given exams conducted prior to final exam week.

Exams are not considered a learning tool but an evaluation tool. In order to maintain content validity and reliability, nursing exams are not returned to the students, note-taking is not allowed and students must return all exams when requested by the faculty member to do so.

Each student is expected to earn his/her grade based on personal effort. Any form of academic dishonesty that includes sharing of test questions/answers with others: face to face, written, texting, posting on social media sites, photo images, etc. is not be tolerated. Penalties may include a zero (0) for the exam, dismissal from the course, program and expulsion from the college.

Posting of Student Grades:
Once a grade has been posted for individual assignments, quizzes, and exams the student has 10 business days to meet with the Classroom Instructor to question their posted grade.

Course Assignments:
The semester calendar for classroom content is available as the schedule of classes. It will be followed as closely as possible. However, due to the nature of the content being covered and student mastery expected, flexibility in time allotted to certain content is necessary.

Clinical Evaluation:
Nursing Practice I clinical performance is evaluated in the on-campus Nursing Skills laboratory, the Simulation Center, and in the clinical areas. All clinical objectives must be satisfactorily achieved to receive a passing grade in Nursing Practice I. In addition to the clinical objectives, all skills taught during Level I must be satisfactorily performed and the following assignments must be satisfactorily completed to pass the clinical component:

1. three nursing care plans
2. an evidence-based practice project
3. one process recording

Clinical is graded as Satisfactory (S) or Not Satisfactory (NS) only. No letter grade will be given for clinical.

Both classroom and clinical portions of the course must be completed satisfactorily to
progress in the nursing program.

Attendance is expected at all clinical experiences in the program. Clinical experiences include scheduled time in the learning laboratory, on-campus clinical, simulation center activities, and the assigned clinical facility. It is expected that students will arrive at the clinical experience on time, be prepared to function as a professional nursing student, and leave at the appointed time.

Tardiness and absences reflect poorly on a student’s commitment to the nursing profession. The following sets forth the consequences for tardiness and absences:

Tardiness:
Three instances of tardiness (less than ten minutes each) in one semester is equal to one clinical absence.

Absences:
Arriving to your clinical experience more than ten minutes late constitutes a clinical absence. Based on the clinical instructor’s discretion, the student may be allowed to participate in the clinical experience, but the absence will still accrue. One absence per semester is allowed in the clinical setting.

* A student will be placed on Clinical Attendance Probation after the first absence in the semester.
* A student will be withdrawn from the nursing program after the second absence in one semester.
* A student may be absent from one learning lab. If a student misses a second learning lab, the student will be withdrawn from the nursing program.

A student may appeal removal from the program based on attendance as set forth in the SCF ASN Nursing Student Program Handbook.

Advisement/Remediation:
Students will be required to meet with their faculty at specific times in the program for advisement or course remediation. During each nursing course the following guidelines will apply:
1. Students will be required to meet with their course faculty if they receive an exam grade of less than 80%.
2. After Exam 2, any student not averaging 80% will be placed on Academic Probation. Academic Probation will remain in effect for the entire semester.
3. All remediation assigned by the faculty must be completed within the specific timeframe.

Withdrawal Policy:
In accordance with the State College of Florida policy as stated in the college catalog, a student may withdraw from any or all courses without the academic penalty of a "WF" grade by the withdrawal deadline as listed in the academic calendar, Catalog or on the SCF website. A student in an accelerated or short-term course may withdraw without the academic penalty of a "WF" grade any time before the withdrawal deadline specific for the course. When a "WF" is entered, it is recorded in the student's permanent record and calculated as an "F" in the grade point average. SCF encourages the student to discuss a withdrawal with the instructor prior to withdrawing. A student who withdraws from any or all courses can withdraw online. Students should consult with the Financial Aid Services office prior to any course withdrawal.
Course withdrawals, after the deadline for the term or accelerated or short term course as published in the academic calendar, will result in a grade of "WF" which is computed in the term and cumulative GPA. Appeal request forms, accompanied by an explanation and documentation detailing major extenuating and documented circumstances, should be directed to the Vice President of Academic Affairs, who has the final approval/disapproval authority. If the appeal is granted, the "WF" grade would be changed to a "W" without GPA consequences. Forms can be obtained from the respective campus advising centers.
Effective fall 1997, the state mandates a student will be permitted a maximum of three attempts per course. An "attempt" is defined as registration in a class after the end of the registration period.
A student must take responsibility for initiating the withdrawal procedure. If this procedure is not followed, a grade of "WF" may be recorded for the student and "F" calculated in the grade point average.
If a "WF" is entered, it will be recorded on the permanent record and calculated as "F" in the grade point average.
All withdrawal policy statements apply to part-time as well as full-time degree credit and developmental credit students.
In accordance with the State College of Florida policy as stated in the college catalog, students may withdraw from any course or all courses without academic penalty of a WF by the withdrawal deadline as listed in the State College of Florida academic calendar. This semester this date is March 23, 2016. The student must take responsibility for initiating the withdrawal procedure. Students are strongly encouraged to talk with their instructors first before taking any withdrawal action.

In addition, students should note that faculty may also withdraw students for violating policies, procedures, or conditions of the class, as outlined in individual class syllabi, and such action could affect financial aid eligibility.
